PAINT MINES INTERPRETIVE PARK

This little gem located near Calhan, colorado was rated by the mother nature network as one of the top twelve most colorful natural wonders of the world. The park features 4 miles of trail that weaves through the colorful geological formations including spires, hoodoos and caves. These formations were formed by erosive action that created the incised gullies and exposed layers of selenite clay and jasper. The colorful rock was used by native americans for pottery and ceremonial paint as well as colorful bricks in the early 1900's. ( information is noted on the parks website)
