COAL MINE CANYON

Coal Mine Canyon, a tributary of the Moenkopi Wash, is a narrow 4 mile canyon located approximately 15 miles from Tuba City, Arizona. The walls of the canyon are composed of intricately eroded spires, hoodoos, gullies, fins and cliffs of many colors. The bright red layers are the result of coloration of shale due to partial burning of the underlying coal.  The rim of the canyon is on Navajo Nation Land and the interior of the canyon is part of the Hopi Nation. Permits are required for both the rim and interior.
