BISTI BADLANDS

(Translated from the Navajo language, Bisti means "a large area of shale hills.")

The Bisti Badlands, officially known as the Bisti Wilderness, is hidden away in the remote high desert of the San Juan Basin in northwest New Mexico. It is a barren yet scenic and colorful landscape where time and natural elements have carved out a fantasy world of strange rock formations.  These rock spires, mounds, and hoodoos are formed from sandstone, shale, mudstone, coal and silt.
